Who broke the EU?
Jan. 31st, 2003 09:27 pmThere have been a lot of declarations that the letter of the "gang of eight" broke the consutative diplomacy and goal of coordianted forign policy of the EU.
Balderdash.
The moment the EU common foreign policy broke was the instant Gerhard Schroder made Iraq an issue in his re-election campaign. He didn't consult other EU memebers, and he didn't just use vauge principles. He said, UN authorization or not, Germany was against war in Iraq.
This left every other EU state in a bind when Schroder was re-elected. They could either allow the campaign promise of a politician in one EU state bind all EU members to a common policy, or they could break the common foreign policy. Mr. Schroder's actions inherently excluded the possibility of a negotiated common EU foreign policy unless he renounces his campaign promises.
Mr. Schroder's unwise campaign, which has hurt U.S.-German relations, now threatens to break the EU. It is time for the most incompetent German leader since the Nazi era to step down.
