Just read "A Wizard of Earthsea"
Jun. 13th, 2007 04:50 amWell, I say read. I was rather impatient from the moment the shadow said "Ged" to the end of the book, looking through to see if either the obvious occurred to the protagonist or there was some twist that made the obvious untrue. (I suspected when they were trying to reach Roke, but that was the clincher.) The obvious did finally occur to the protagonist, at the end of the book.
I think I'd have liked the book a lot more had I read it when I was younger. Fifteen, twenty years younger.
Oh, and if true names are so important, why do they get thrown around so much? "Oh, I need to give it to you, stranger, just to go through this door? Sure!" "Oh, you again. I have to learn your name to go back out the door? What is it? Thanks!" "Hey, let's talk to each other using the truename within hearing of your sister, depending on the fact that we're whispering to keep it secret!" "Oh, by the way, my sister's truename is. . . . "
Yes, I realize all those uses are theoretically exceptional. But I was told that, I wasn't shown that.
