I think any of the three almost-kills would have been a more impacting death than the actual kill.

Agreed, especially in the way it happened. I can understand why it was a big impact for Harry, but we were so distanced from it ourselves, we could only watch him suffer, not go through it with him.

On reading the scene, I thought, "So Rowling cried over *this*?"
