Warming on Mars
Sep. 21st, 2005 11:28 amThere's been a minority theory running around that warming and cooling cycles on Earth are primarily caused by solar fluctuations. Both direct-observation records of sunspots and 10beryllium counts in Greenland ice are cited by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research as evidence the Sun is outputting more energy now than at any point in the last 1,100 years. This would, by the way, explain the period of global cooling known as the Little Ice Age.
Interestingly, NASA's observations of the Mars ice caps indicate that Mars, too, is warming -- which is what one would expect for solar-caused heating, instead of greenhouse gas-driven heating.
Certainly, greenhouse gas output is not helping -- but this suggests there's a limit to how much of global warming is caused or controllable by humans.
